I Don't Wanna Talk About It

David woke to the blaring light of an unfamiliar window, his head throbbing with a hangover that felt like a personal vendetta. He blinked several times, trying to make sense of the generic hotel room surroundings before his eyes landed on his own body—and what he saw made his stomach drop through the floor. His blond hair had been teased into an elaborate bouffant of volume, soft feathered layers framing his face in a way that looked almost elegant if you squinted hard enough and had very low standards. The lilac pencil skirt squeezed his hips uncomfortably, while the tie-front crop top exposed his midriff in a manner that made him acutely aware of every single muscle he didn't have. The taupe pantyhose felt like a second skin he never asked for, and his feet were stuffed into tan slingback heels with a modest 1 1/2 inch heel that somehow managed to be both comfortable and completely mortifying. He touched the delicate hoop earrings instinctively, then immediately wished he hadn't, and the simple necklace around his neck felt like a brand he could never erase.

Panic set in as David realized he wasn't in his own apartment. The room was some kind of hotel or motel—cheap, anonymous, and offering no clues about the night before. His own home was forty miles away, completely out of the question on foot. His keys, wallet, phone, and every scrap of his actual clothing had vanished as thoroughly as his dignity. With no options and two miles of open road between him and his parents' house, David did what any reasonable person in an unreasonable situation would do: he put one heel in front of the other and started walking.

The morning sun was unhelpful, casting everything in bright, unforgiving daylight that seemed designed specifically to humiliate him. David's first steps in the heels were hesitant, his ankles wobbling precariously as he found his balance on the unfamiliar elevation. The 1 1/2 inch lift changed his posture noticeably, tilting his hips slightly and forcing a gait that was decidedly un-masculine. A woman walking her dog glanced over, did a visible double-take, and quickened her pace. David kept his eyes fixed forward, channeling all his energy into looking like someone who had planned this outfit for the day. The heels clicked against the sidewalk in a rhythm that felt both accusatory and oddly rhythmic, and he found himself unconsciously matching his steps to the sound. A man in a passing pickup truck leaned on his horn and shouted something unintelligible, which David chose to interpret as complimentary just to preserve his sanity. By the time he reached the outskirts of his parents' neighborhood, his feet were aching and his dignity was in critical condition, but he refused to stop.

David climbed the familiar porch steps, his heels catching slightly on each riser, and stood before the door like a man facing judgment day. The door swung open, and there stood his younger brother Jake, coffee mug in hand, looking for all the world like someone who had not a care in existence—until his eyes traveled downward and his expression underwent a complete transformation. Jake's mouth opened, then closed, then opened again, producing absolutely no sound whatsoever. The silence stretched for an eternity. "I don't want to talk about it," David said quickly, shouldering past his stunned sibling and making a beeline for the stairs. Behind him, Jake finally found his voice: "What the hell, David?"
